We are wrapping up our Doctoral Candidates series with Madalina Moscu, the HMI developer on the SmartAnkle team. 💡
👩🏻💻 About: Madalina is a PhD candidate in Electrical Engineering and Automation at Aalto University (Finland), in collaboration with Tecnalia Serbia Ltd, as part of the SmartAnkle project. She holds a BSc in Automatic Control and Applied Informatics from Politehnica University of Bucharest, and a double MSc degree in Advanced Robotics from Ecole Centrale de Nantes and Keio University. Her research interests focus on applied embodied AI and graph modelling, with an emphasis on human-robot interaction.
🦿 SmartAnkle Project: Madalina’s role involves developing a robust interface between the AFO and its user, in other words, translating user intent into synergistic movements of the AFO. The device must generate assistive/resistive forces based on the estimated ankle joint torque profile of the user. The main challenge is derived from the high variability of these profiles across different operating environments, activities and physiological states.
⭐️ Current Work: Madalina investigates graph neural networks for fusing multi-modal data to predict ankle kinematics across multiple activities. The model is trained and evaluated using a dataset recorded at Aalto University, in the Bionic and Rehabilitation Engineering Laboratory.
