🎓 Meet the Researchers Behind SmartAnkle! 🦿✨

Fourth in our Doctoral Candidates series: meet James, who’s investigating remote actuation in the SmartAnkle project.

👨🏻‍💻 About: James is a PhD candidate in Mechanical Engineering at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), collaborating with Axiles Bionics in Brussels. James holds a BSc and MEng in Biomedical Engineering from University College Dublin (UCD) with a focus on actuation in wearable robotics and healthcare in low and middle income countries.

🦿 SmartAnkle Project: As part of the SmartAnkle MSCA Doctoral Network, James is focused on modelling and understanding a novel remote actuation method with regards to lower-limb wearable robotics, flexible shafts. His goal is to model, control and implement this method of remote actuation into an ankle-foot orthosis. Following this, assessing the benefits and limitations of their use in human testing will be used to establish their applicability to the field.

⭐️ Current work: His research explores the limitations associated with this method of remote actuation as well as simple design approaches to solve these problems. Through this process, he aims to develop a framework for easy integration and control of flexible shafts in wearable robotics.
