🎓 Meet the Researchers Behind SmartAnkle! 🦿✨

We’re excited to continue the Doctoral Candidates series with our colleague Aurora, the mind behind the mechanical design of SmartAnkle.

👨🏽‍💻 About: Aurora is enrolled as a PhD student at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at University College of Dublin, while working as a Research Engineer at Ottobock. Originally from Rome, she completed her undergraduate studies in Industrial Engineering and earned a MS in Biomedical Engineering—with a focus on Biorobotics and Ergonomics—at the University Campus Bio-Medico of Rome.

🦿 SmartAnkle Project: As part of the SmartAnkle team, Aurora is dedicated to the development of a semi-passive Ankle-Foot Orthosis (AFO) designed to support post stroke patients in the chronic phase. Her research is focused on developing a user-centered device that could easily adapt to the user condition and needs, promoting greater independence and helping patients regain mobility in everyday activities.

⭐️Current work: As a first step, Aurora is now working on a first prototype. The first phase involves testing with healthy subjects with the ultimate goal of moving to patient trials, for a better evaluation of the functionality. Through this process, she aims to assess how her design can improve gait and overall quality of life for users.
